EDI Graduate Student Facilitator

The organizing committee for the equity, diversity and inclusion speaker series in Statistics is hiring two graduate student facilitator positions.


The Equity, diversity, and inclusion speaker series in Statistics is a six-part seminar series from April to November 2022 inviting speakers doing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) work in Statistics, Data Science, or teaching. The purpose of the series is to increase opportunities in the Statistics Department to engage with different ways of knowing and increase inclusive dialogues. Talks will be open to graduate students, post-docs, and faculty in Statistics. A small team of graduate students and two faculty members will organize and facilitate each event. The students and faculty members will be trained to facilitate such events and will prepare guiding questions for the discussion.

Two graduate student facilitators are needed. Duties of the role may include (but are not limited to):

  • Participation in facilitation training
  • Involvement in the planning and facilitation of six seminars and corresponding discussions

Required availability: The position will start in February. Seminars will take place in April, May, June, September, October, and November. Student facilitators need to be available during the seminar time itself (Tuesdays 10:30 AM – 1 PM) to facilitate.

Training: Graduate student facilitators will be required to complete a UBC Facilitation Skills Training online course, and other training as needed.

Qualifications: Only current UBC students in the Statistics department will be considered. Experience with, knowledge of or interest in equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives. Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written. Experience with facilitation and leading discussions is an asset. International Students must be eligible to work in Canada. Salary: $33.50/hr. Students will be hired on an hourly basis with a maximum of 26 hours for the 10-month employment term.
