Abstract | The evolution of physical traits from one generation to the next depends on a selection mechanism and the existence of genetic variability in the parent population. The modelling and statistical analysis of this evolution is well-developed for qualitative traits and for real or vector valued traits. The methodology can be found in quantitative genetics textbooks, as well as in evolutionary biology and animal breeding literature. The development of methodology for function-valued traits is just beginning. I will explain, in statistician's terms, some basic concepts of quantitative genetics, and discuss connections to functional data analysis. |
