Professor Ruben Zamar and PhD student Andy Leung awarded NSERC Egage Grant

Professor Ruben Zamar and Dr. Saber Miresmailli, founder and CEO of Ecoation Innovative Solution Inc. Statistics Department Award in Data Science

In 2014-15, the Statistics Department announced a new student award, in Data Science, and received many excellent nominations. 

This award's first recipient is Rosemary McCloskey, a Master’s student in Bioinformatics, in recognition of her contributions to a large-scale project on virus evolution at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.

Two Upcoming Lectures by van Eeden Invited Speaker Professor Roger Cooke

Statistics course offers training in Data Science

This fall, the department is very pleased to expand upon the popular Exploratory Data Analysis Course (STAT 545A) by offering a follow-up topics course titled "Basic Training for Data Science" (STAT 547M) Both courses are open to graduate students from any discipline.

Student Paper Award Winner - Camila de Souza

Dr. Camila de Souza has been selected to receive the Journal of Nonparametric Statistics’ Best Student Paper Award for her paper "Switching nonparametric regression models”.

Nancy Heckman Elected to Serve on Council of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics

Dr. Nancy Heckman, professor and Head of Statistics at UBC, has been elected to serve on the Council of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, as announced in the July 15, 2015 issue of the IMS Bulletin.
 
Her term will be for a period of three years, beginning with the IMS Business Meeting at the Joint Statistical Meetings that will take place in Seattle over the period Aug 8 – 13, 2015....

2014 Nash Medal Winner - Tian Qi (Ricky) Chen

The Nash Medal in Statistics is a prize given to the most outstanding graduating student in the B.Sc. program in Statistics. This year, it has been awarded to Tian Qi (Ricky) Chen.

Ricky graduated with joint Honours in Statistics and Computer Science and is entering the M.Sc. program in Computer Science at UBC this fall.
