Congratulations to FoS Achievement Award Winners Andrea and Andy!

Andrea Sollberger, our Student Services Coordinator, and Andy Leung, a Ph.D. student, have just been awarded Faculty of Science Achievement Awards for Service. These awards recognize exceptional contributions of faculty, staff, and students.

PhD students Yang (Seagle) Liu wins best paper award in a competition organized by the ASA’s Section on Statistics and the Environment (ENVR).

Seagle's winning paper is entitled "Bayesian Melding of the Dead-Reckoned Path and GPS Measur ements for an Accurate and High-Resolution Path of Marine Mammals”.

The ASA’s announcement states in part: “Dear Seagle: Congratulations!  You were selected as one of the four award winners for the ENVR paper competition -- out of a huge field of 31 papers!”  

The award includes a cash prize of $1500 to cover Seagle’s travel to 2015 JSM conference in Seattle, apart from the...

New Statistics course offering in Data Science

This fall, the department is very pleased to expand upon the popular exploratory data analysis course (STAT 545A) by offering a follow-up topics course titled "Basic Training for Data Science" (STAT 547M) Both courses are open to graduate students from any discipline.

Jinyuan Zhang wins Best Poster Award at ARC

MSc. candidate Jinyuan Zhang won the Best Poster Award at the Actuarial Research Conference held at the UC Santa Barbara, CA on July 13-16, 2014. Jinyuan's poster is titled  “Conditional Extremes in Asymmetric Financial Markets”, and is based on part of her MSc. project. Jinyuan is supervised by Professor Natalia Nolde.

New course! STAT 357/EECE 357 Stochastic Signals and Systems

 The Statistics Department will be offering this new course, in cooperation with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Although the course was developed for undergraduate students in Electrical Engineering, the material should be of interest to students in Statistics. In particular, students interested in data science methods in signal processing will find this course a good introduction.

 Either EECE 357 or STAT 357 will count towards your statistics program...

Statistics on Reels Award Winner - Md Mahsin

Md Mahsin was a finalist in the Statistics on Reels competition - a new competition, part of the Statistical Society of Canada’s Student Conference.   Mahsin has made a movie explaining his research  -  Determination of Sample Size for Phase II Clinical Trials in Multiple Sclerosis using Lesional Recovery as an Outcome Measure.  The work is carried out with John Petkau and Yinshan Zhao.

UBC Statistics Students bring home Statistical Society of Canada awards

Best student presentation:  Yumi Kondo for her poster describing joint work with Yinshan Zhao and John Petkau "multiple end points in multiple sclerosis patients" .

Case study #2 winning team:  Yumi Kondo, MD Mahsin, Kyle Hambrook, and Yanling (Tara) Cai.

This was a very challenging competition! 

The subject was:  Analysis of player interaction data from a mobile social game:  finding interactions between game factors and player factors that predict engagement.

Vivian Meng receives Honorable Mention Gertrude Cox Scholarship Award

Vivian Meng has received an Honorable Mention Gertrude Scholarship Award.  This prestigious award is given annually by the American Statistical Association, and is presented at the Joint Statistical Meetings.    Her citation reads:  "for academic achievement in the University of British Columbia statistics program, outstanding advancement of both development and application of statistical methods related to population size estimation using multiple data sources, advancing the statistics...
