Nikola Surjanovic has been a PhD student in the UBC Department of Statistics since September 2021, and he is the holder of the prestigious Vanier Scholarship. He is supervised by Professors Alexandre Bouchard-Côté and Trevor Campbell.
Nikola has been a core contributor and founding member of the Pigeons software project, which enables users to approximate challenging Bayesian posterior distributions and high-dimensional integrals. He has publications in statistics journals, as well as machine learning conferences such as Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems and the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics. He has also been involved in data science collaborative projects with researchers from the fields of astrophysics and rheumatology.
The Data Science Award recognizes the importance of developing and applying tools to answer important questions through the analysis of data and is offered annually to an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated initiative and creativity in making outstanding contributions to the field of Data Science. Recipients can be from any undergraduate or graduate program at UBC-Vancouver.
